Our sepia portrait wraps the whole shirt: a calm young woman in samurai armor, holding a fierce skull mask as petals drift past. The mask nods to the menpō, the face armor samurai wore into battle. Historic menpō were often sculpted with snarling mouths, moustaches or demon features, both to protect the face and to intimidate an opponent.
